Traveling to Chiang Rai

Chiang Rai Province is located in the northern part of Thailand approximately 790 km. from Bangkok. There are many ways to travel to Chiang Rai either via private vehicles, public transportations such as buses or trains

Private Vehicles

Route 1 :

Use the Asian Highway No. 32 through Ayutthaya, Angthong Province, Singhburi Province, Nakorn Sawan Province. Head into National Highway 1 in Nakorn Sawan passing Amphoe Klongkloong, Kampaengpet Province, Tak Province, Amphoe Tern, Amphoe Sobprab, Amphoe Ngao, Lampang Province. The road from Lampang to Payao are mostly steep turns on mountain routes so drive with caution. The road will lead directly to downtown Payao Province. From here, continue to use the National Highway 1 heading to Chiang Rai. A total distance of 850 km.

Route 2 :

Use the Asian Highway No. 32 through Ayutthaya, Angthong Province, Singhburi Province, Nakorn Sawan Province before making a right turn into National Highway 117 heading to Phisanulok Province, make a left into National Highway 12 heading straight to Sukhothai Province, make a right turn into National Highway 101 passing through Amphoe Denchai, Prae Province, then a left into National Highway 103 passing through Amphoe Rongkwang heading into National Highway 1 passing through Amphoe Ngao heading towards downtown Payao and continue to use the same route heading directly to Chiang Rai. A total distance of 877 km.

Route 3 :

This route is using the outter ring using National Highway 11 from Amphoe Intrburi, Singhburi Province passing through Takfa – Wangthong – Phisanulok Province – Utaradit Province – Denchai – Prae Province – Rongkwang before making a left into National Highway 103 heading to Amphoe Ngao. Then head into National Highway 1 passing Payao province into Chiang Rai. A total distance of 785 km.

Trains

Train destination from Bangkok ends in Chiang Mai Province or Lampang Province. Once arrived in Chiang Mai Province, take the red bus or a taxi to the Green Bus station heading to Chiang Rai departing every hour.
